Laboratory with a unique microscope opened at Sakhalin State University: it can search for uranium in the ocean

The device will allow conducting research at the nanometer level

A microscopy laboratory with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) has been opened at Sakhalin State University — a device unique to the island region, which has opened up opportunities for research at the nanometer level for scientists and students.

The equipment is installed at the Institute of Natural Sciences and Technosphere Safety. It allows studying the surface of materials, examining flora and fauna on a microscale, as well as conducting elemental analysis of samples.

Thanks to scanning electron microscopy, we are expanding opportunities in the field of materials science. Now we can clearly control the results of material synthesis and present experimental data in high-level scientific journals. For example, we are involved in obtaining materials for extracting uranium from seawater. This is critical, as uranium reserves on land are being depleted, and there is a lot of it in the ocean. With the help of SEM, we can see the structure of the substance and understand how to improve its properties in order to selectively extract the valuable element without extracting anything unnecessary.

Acting Rector of Sakhalin State University Alexey Ognev noted that this is the highest-resolution device for the university. Electron microscopy has appeared in Sakhalin for the first time, which significantly improves the quality of scientific research. The laboratory will become not only a center of attraction for scientists, but also a platform for career guidance for schoolchildren.
