The train consisted of eight passenger cars carrying 415 people. According to preliminary data from the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Ulyanovsk region, seven people were injured in the incident, including one child. The condition of the victims is being clarified.

Emergency services, units of the Ministry of Emergency Situations and three recovery trains were sent to the scene. More than a hundred people and 32 pieces of equipment are involved in the aftermath. An additional train with two passenger cars with a capacity of up to 150 people was sent from the Ulyanovsk-Central station to evacuate passengers.

A possible defect in the rail track is being considered as a preliminary cause of the derailment — in particular, a burst rail. The final conclusions will be made by the commission of inquiry. The Transport Prosecutor's Office has already begun an investigation into compliance with the requirements of legislation on traffic safety and the operation of railway transport.
