The installation of hydro-accumulators of the passive core flooding system has been completed at the second power unit of the Akkuyu NPP in Turkey. Eight tanks took their regular place in the reactor building, and the entire installation work lasted nine days.
Each vessel is made of stainless steel and weighs 96 tons. The internal volume of the structure is 120 m³. The heavy equipment was fixed on a reinforced support frame designed for operational and seismic loads.
After the unit is started, the tanks will be filled with a solution of boric acid. The mechanism works completely autonomously. If the pressure in the primary circuit of the reactor plant drops below a specified level, the liquid flows by gravity into the core. The method ensures fuel cooling without the use of external pumps or electricity sources. Passive safety systems eliminate the influence of the human factor and increase the stability of the station in emergency situations.
