Russian engineers have removed the main risk for machine tool drives: the flywheel no longer spins

The new gearbox instantly disconnects the motor and relieves the load on the operator

Bernard Control has developed a new modular gearbox for electric drives of industrial valves. The development solves a key problem in the industry — how to safely and quickly switch the motor drive to manual control without disassembling the unit and risking personnel. The documents were published in the database of the Federal Service for Intellectual Property (FIPS) in February 2026.

In classic servo drives, manual mode remains cumbersome. The operator has to overcome the friction of the stopped motor, and the rotating flywheel creates a hazard. Changing the gear ratio requires replacing gears and maintenance.

The new design uses a cam clutch and a disconnecting rod. When switching to manual mode, the rod mechanically disconnects the motor from the worm gear, and the flywheel connects without resistance.

When the motor is started, the system automatically returns the engagement. This reduces the load on the operator and eliminates the dangerous rotation of the flywheel.

The gearbox is modular: the sun and satellite gears can be rearranged and interchanged, quickly obtaining the required gear ratio without new parts. The layout reduces the size of the drive and simplifies service.

The solution is designed for the energy, water supply and oil and gas industries, where valves operate under high pressure.
