A new software (SW) for modeling pulsed generation modes in rare-earth fiber lasers has been developed at Novosibirsk State Technical University (NSTU). This was reported by the university's press service.
Rare-earth fiber lasers are characterized by high power, beam quality, compactness, and energy efficiency. The use of various rare-earth elements (ytterbium, erbium, thulium, holmium, and neodymium) allows for wavelength tuning, making them in demand in telecommunications, industry, medicine, and sensors.
The tool is based on a numerical solution of the transport equation for the generation radiation power circulating in the fiber laser resonator, and a system of equations for the gain of this radiation in the active fiber.
The new software allows for modeling a wide range of laser generation modes. Unlike its counterparts, it has reduced requirements for computing resources, in particular, it requires less RAM.
According to Boris Nyushkov, head of the Laboratory of General and Applied Photonics and head of the Department of Laser Systems at NSTU, the new program makes it possible to conduct preliminary research without the need to create a full-fledged experimental setup. This saves resources and time, and also allows for faster identification of non-obvious physical patterns.
