As part of an ambitious plan to develop the Northern Sea Route (NSR) until 2035, the construction of an additional 10 icebreakers, as well as 46 vessels for the emergency rescue fleet and three bases for their deployment, is planned. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District (FEFD) Yuri Trutnev.
According to Trutnev, the document covers 155 activities, divided into five key areas: the formation of a cargo base, the modernization of transport infrastructure, the renewal of the cargo and icebreaker fleet, ensuring the safety of navigation on the NSR, as well as the management and development of Arctic shipping.
The development of the NSR is becoming particularly relevant in the context of global climate change and the growing interest in Arctic resources. New icebreakers and auxiliary vessels will ensure year-round navigation, minimize the risk of accidents and increase the efficiency of cargo transportation, including hydrocarbons and minerals.
