The Ural Design Bureau of Transport Engineering (UKBTM) has registered a patent for a method of additional armor protection for the chassis hull of ground armored vehicles, including tanks. The new system is designed to protect against kamikaze drones and unmanned aerial vehicles carrying shaped-charge munitions.
The method involves installing removable standardized protective modules on the side fenders above the tracks. These modules fill the space freed up after the removal of equipment and spare parts and protect the side projections of the hull when attacked by munitions at any angle from 0 to 90°.
Each module contains armor packages with inert filler, explosive reactive armor elements, and devices for quick removal.
The system includes four sets of modules: two in the front part of the fenders to protect the fighting and power compartments, and two in the middle and rear sections to protect critically important components.
The armor packages will be positioned at different angles and offsets to dissipate the energy of the shaped-charge jet. The mass of the modules does not exceed the weight of the dismantled equipment, which will preserve the vehicle's mobility.
