Transmashholding delivered two NPM2M model industrial electric locomotives to Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works (MMK), the largest enterprise in this sector in Russia. The locomotives are intended for operation on electrified sections of plant railway tracks with a nominal overhead contact system voltage of 1500 V DC.
NPM2M electric locomotives are manufactured at TMH's Novocherkassk Electric Locomotive Plant. The locomotive's key structural elements are of domestic origin, which ensures technological independence during operation.
The modernized version of the NPM2M has been produced since 2013 as a development of the base NPM2 model, created in 2004 by VELNII specialists jointly with MMK engineers and the manufacturing enterprise. The main improvements concerned reliability and efficiency:
- the interval between overhauls was increased from 30 to 45 days;
- electricity consumption was reduced by 15–20%;
- an asynchronous traction drive with axle-hung suspension on rolling bearings that do not require maintenance during operation was applied;
- intelligent drivers were installed with protection against short circuits, switching overvoltages, and supply voltage monitoring;
- Class 45 power transistors (4500 V) were used, with a safe operating area expanded by 30% compared with their predecessors;
- the cab ergonomics were improved: visibility was enhanced and operation was simplified.
At present, MMK operates 11 electric locomotives of the base NPM2 model and 18 modernized NPM2M units.
