Rosatom has proposed creating an "atomic cluster" at the site of the nuclear power plant under construction in Uzbekistan. This was announced by Alexey Likhachev, Director General of the State Corporation.
According to Likhachev, the idea is not only to create a station city for NPP employees, but also to form a scientific and innovation center that will combine the areas of nuclear energy, medicine, radiology and materials science.
The Kurchatov Institute, a key scientific organization of the Russian nuclear industry, will take part in the project.
Earlier, the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Alexey Likhachev discussed the progress of the construction of an integrated nuclear power plant in Tashkent. The head of Rosatom noted that the work is being carried out according to schedule: in October 2025, the development of the pit for the first small power unit began, and in 2026 it is planned to proceed to pouring concrete into the base of the foundation slab.
The construction of the station in the Jizzakh region of Uzbekistan is carried out by order of the Uzatom Agency and is a strategic project of the two countries. The commissioning of the facility will provide up to 14% of the republic's electricity needs. At the peak of construction, about 13 thousand jobs will be created, and training is conducted by specialized universities of Rosatom and a branch of MEPhI in Tashkent.
