The National Automobile Union (NAS) has put forward an initiative to introduce green license plates for electric vehicles and turquoise ones for autonomous vehicles in Russia. The Union has sent a corresponding letter to the Prime Minister of Russia, Mikhail Mishustin.
NAS proposes to amend the law on vehicle registration. According to the head of the organization, Anton Shaparin, it is important that other road users can easily identify autonomously moving vehicles. He emphasized that now is the most opportune moment to introduce such amendments, as well as to introduce green license plates for electric vehicles. This is due to the existing benefits for parking and road tolls for such cars.
Shaparin noted that the use of new colors for license plates will not only simplify the work of law enforcement agencies, but also increase road safety for highly automated vehicles.
We should immediately allocate green license plates for "electric cars" — this is practical, because we have benefits for parking and for paying for routes for such cars, and it will be more convenient for law enforcement officers to identify them.
The Ministry of Transport previously published a bill that establishes the legal framework for the operation of autonomous transport. The document may come into force on September 1, 2027, and driverless cars will massively appear on Russian roads as early as 2028.
