The authorities of Makhachkala decided to completely abandon the trolleybus traffic in the city. They liquidated the "Makhachkala Trolleybus Administration" MUP after the decision of the head of the city administration, Dzhambulat Salavov.
The reason is money. The company has accumulated a debt of 265 million rubles. Additional difficulties arose due to lack of funding, frequent power outages and suspension of routes.
The history of trolleybuses in the city ended with the closure of routes No. 5 and No. 6. The last day of their movement was December 18.
The next day, December 19, 2025, at 11:00, the last meeting of the employees of the trolleybus administration was held, at which they all signed resignation letters.
The history of the trolleybus network began in the early seventies, and the official opening of traffic took place on February 13, 1973. In the most active years, 12 routes functioned in the city, and this system was considered the southernmost in Russia. The trolleybus worked in Makhachkala for 52 years.
