Scientists from the Central Research Institute of Structural Materials "Prometey", which is part of the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute", have created a new method of hot isostatic pressing for the manufacture of products from titanium alloys of various classes.
The current production of titanium alloy products for a number of industries is a long cycle of technological operations: melting ingots, obtaining slabs by plastic deformation, rolling, forging or stamping, heat treatment and machining.
As an alternative, scientists proposed a method of hot isostatic pressing, which, as a result of a comparative analysis, showed an increase in the level of mechanical characteristics and operational properties. During microstructural studies, a high isotropy of the compacted material was found in various sections of the sample, that is, the material obtained by the new method demonstrates the preservation of physical properties in all directions, in contrast to the properties of the casting and deformed semi-finished product.
The technology for manufacturing semi-finished products can be successfully used for marine engineering and instrument engineering products, where the properties of the structural material decisively affect the operational characteristics of the product.
