The Philippines has announced the commissioning of its first battery of the BrahMos coastal anti-ship missile system. The PJ-10 supersonic missiles, created as part of a Russian-Indian collaboration and purchased from India, are capable of hitting targets at a range of up to 350 kilometers.
The complex will allow the Philippine armed forces to control key areas of the South China Sea, including the Scarborough Shoal disputed with China.
The PJ-10 BrahMos missile structurally replicates the Russian 3M55 Onyx ASCM and reaches speeds of up to Mach 2.8 at high altitude flight profile. When flying near the sea surface, the speed is about Mach 2, and the range is up to 120 kilometers.
Thanks to its high maneuverability and ability to perform anti-aircraft maneuvers with overloads of up to 17 g, BrahMos is considered one of the most dangerous anti-ship systems in its class.
