For the first time since the beginning of 2025, a complete lull has been recorded on the Sun - the flare activity index has dropped to zero. Over the past two days, scientists have not registered a single solar flare. This was reported by the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Institute for Space Research of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Solar-Terrestrial Physics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
According to experts, this is a rare phenomenon: there was not a single burst of radiation on the side of the Sun facing the Earth.
"For the first time this year, a zero value of the flare activity index has been recorded. No flares have been recorded in 48 hours," the laboratory specified. Scientists note that events on the far side of the Sun are not taken into account, as they cannot be accurately measured.
Researchers emphasize that in 2025, the Sun is demonstrating "contradictory behavior." After a period of record activity in 2024, when powerful flares and magnetic storms were recorded, the star seems to be "taking a break." This complicates forecasts and does not allow us to determine whether the peak of the 25th solar cycle has ended or whether there is a new surge ahead.
Despite the decrease in activity, scientists warn that the geomagnetic situation on Earth remains unstable. According to the forecast of the Solar Astronomy Laboratory, the risk of magnetic disturbances will persist in the coming days. The probability of magnetic storms is estimated at 55%, but so far the Earth's magnetosphere remains calm.
