VTB Bank and the Center for Biometric Technologies presented a terminal for payment using a vein pattern on the palm. The innovative approach will be demonstrated at the FINOPOLIS 2025 exhibition.
The terminal uses an IR sensor to scan blood vessels. It is planned that vein patterns can be added to the Unified Biometric System (UBS) along with other data. According to VTB, the new method may become an alternative to facial recognition, as the vein pattern will become a more reliable and difficult-to-fake method of identification.
According to a VTB representative, palm recognition is an approach that can be placed at any angle and in any location. In the future, users will be able to choose a method of identification when paying, and vein data will be stored in the UBS.
Other banks, such as Alfa-Bank and Sberbank, have already begun to implement similar technologies. For example, Alfa-Bank has been using this method to access bank cells since 2018. In China, WeChat Pay launched palm payment in 2023.
