Biometrics could become an alternative way to identify Russians when buying age-restricted goods (18+), said Roman Chekushov, Deputy Head of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation, on the sidelines of the "Innoprom. Central Asia" exhibition.
This would make it possible to cut off sales of goods to those persons who do not have the right to make purchases.
The sale of goods through the Unified Biometric System (UBS) "would testify to the development of new technologies," the official concluded.
Earlier, the head of the Center for Biometric Technologies (UBS operator), Vladislav Povolotsky, said that they plan to start selling alcoholic beverages using biometrics in 2025. The service can be extended to any goods in the 18+ category.
UBS is a state information system that ensures the collection, storage and use of biometric data of Russians. Its goal is to ensure the availability of services for which proof of identity is required. The system registers the user's voice and face.
