The control assembly is the final stage in the manufacture of the "heart" of the icebreaker, when the compatibility of all elements is checked before being sent to the shipyard. The manufacture of the reactor kit took three years, 100 production secrets were used and seven inventions were patented. The first reactor was assembled in May of this year.
RITM-400 is an improved version of RITM-200. The main difference is that the steam generators are located inside the hull, which significantly reduces the size and weight of the equipment. The thermal power of the new reactor reaches 315 MW, which makes it the most powerful marine reactor plant in the world. This power allows the icebreaker to break ice up to four meters thick.
The head of Rosatom's machine-building division, Igor Kotov, noted that a total of 12 RITM series reactor plants have been manufactured, including 10 RITM-200s. Another 14 reactors are in operation for the nuclear icebreaker fleet and small nuclear power.
The icebreaker "Russia" with RITM-400 reactors will become Russia's key tool for the development of the Arctic, ensuring safe navigation and transportation of resources in extreme ice conditions.
