The first LED cinema screens, created as part of a collaboration between the Yakut company "Extra Cinema" and Chinese AOTO, are planned for release in early 2026. This was announced by Petr Chiryaev, General Director of "Extra Cinema", to TASS. The project aims to create affordable screens for cinemas with high image quality.
The agreement between the companies was signed in August 2025. The technology is being developed outside the DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives, cinema standard), which will reduce the cost of screens without losing quality. According to Chiryaev, their content protection system surpasses some DCI standards. The first screens will compete in price with top DCI projectors for large cinemas. The project began in 2022 with the equipping of cultural centers in the villages of Yakutia, where the equipment of one hall costs less than 1 million rubles.
We have agreed with AOTO on the joint development of similar screens outside the DCI standard, which will reduce their cost without losing image quality. At the same time, our system of working with content and its protection is in some ways even superior to DCI standards. We plan to release the first cinema screen at the beginning of next year. We will try to make its cost competitive with the price of top DCI projectors for large halls.
LED screens are considered an advanced cinema technology. In 2024, AOTO was recognized as the best manufacturer of such screens in the world. In China, 80 cinemas have already been re-equipped under the state modernization program. The technology provides a clear, bright, and contrasting image, comparable to professional studio monitors. "Extra Cinema" plans to create a line of screens for premium cinemas.
The quality of these screens is truly outstanding — in 2024, AOTO was recognized as the best manufacturer of LED screens in the world. Diode production technologies have radically changed — the image has become so clear, bright, and contrasting that it is difficult to distinguish it from top studio monitors. In China, the transition from projection cinema to LED cinema has already begun: a state program for the modernization of cinemas has been launched, and AOTO has already re-equipped 80 halls. Such screens are installed in the best cinemas in megacities.
The project is also of interest in the BRICS, SCO, and EurAsEC countries, including Africa, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Belarus, and Kyrgyzstan, where there is a need for affordable cinemas. Work is also underway to develop and disseminate the technology with Kyrgyzstan and Belarus.
