Max Messenger continues to attract scammers: first cases now in Yekaterinburg

The scheme remains the same — victims are convinced of a personal data leak

Two cases of telephone fraud via the new Max messenger have been recorded in Yekaterinburg, said the head of the city police department, Police Colonel Viktor Poznyak, at a TASS press conference on August 20.

The losses of the victims amounted to about one million rubles: in the first case — 600 thousand, in the second — about 350 thousand.

According to Poznyak, the scheme of crimes remains the same. Scammers convince the victim that her personal data has been hacked, and then state that the money was allegedly transferred to "unfriendly countries."

Since the beginning of the year, more than 1,400 cases of fraud have been registered in Yekaterinburg for a total amount of almost 939 million rubles, two of them are related to the use of the Max messenger. The head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs stressed that the platform does not matter — criminals use the same scenarios.

Earlier, Roskomnadzor restricted the possibility of calls in Telegram and WhatsApp to reduce the number of such crimes.
