Cameras are being actively introduced on Russian roads to detect violations related to the use of mobile phones and unfastened seat belts. In most cases, artificial intelligence is used for this, which allows to accurately determine whether the phone is in the driver's hand.
According to the State Traffic Inspectorate, up to 70% of women and 55% of men admit that they have at least once created an emergency situation due to a phone conversation. However, the real statistics may be significantly higher.
Using the phone while driving is a non-obvious but common cause of accidents that many drivers underestimate. Even a short distraction on the screen can lead to serious consequences, especially in heavy city traffic. Scientists have found that distraction by phone significantly increases the risk of accidents, as drivers lose control of the situation on the road.
Cameras operate on the basis of neural networks. AI is trained to recognize the steering wheel, the driver's hands and mobile devices. Special infrared spotlights provide illumination of the car interior. This approach allows cameras to work in all conditions. After automatic recording of the violation, the data is checked by employees of the Center for Road Traffic Organization (TsODD) and transferred to the State Traffic Inspectorate for issuing fines.
More than 500 cameras are already operating in the capital, recording unfastened seat belts and the absence of helmets among motorcyclists. The TsODD plans to increase the number of cameras recording the use of telephones while driving. This will help reduce the number of accidents and improve road safety.
Earlier www1.ru reported that the reform of road cameras did not lead to significant changes.
