Foreign online booking services will not be disconnected in Russia, but it is necessary to create conditions for the development of domestic platforms. This was stated by the Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Communications, Sergei Boyarsky.
We cannot just turn off Booking.com. We understand that it is needed by Russian tourists for traveling abroad and by foreigners for visiting Russia. But we want to create conditions so that Russian citizens, when traveling around the country, use domestic services.
Earlier, the Association of Tourist Aggregators (ATAG) proposed to normatively restrict the return of foreign housing booking services, such as Booking.com and Airbnb, to the Russian market. Boyarsky noted that domestic services have already completely replaced foreign players. However, according to him, they may not be able to withstand competition with large foreign companies due to limited financial capabilities and consumer habits.
The Booking.com hotel booking service website continues to operate in Russia with restrictions after the company left the Russian Federation in 2022.
