Smolensk NPP's "life" extended: service life of power unit No. 2 extended by another 5 years

During this time, the plant will generate 100 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity

Rostekhnadzor has issued a permit to extend the service life of the second power unit of the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) for an additional five years, the press service of the Rosatom State Corporation reported.

This is the second extension after a major upgrade. Now the power unit will operate for 45 years instead of 30.

According to new data, consumers will receive an additional 35 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. Smolensk NPP will continue to produce isotopic products needed for medicine and industry.

Now all three power units of the Smolensk NPP are operating with extended terms. This will allow generating more than 100 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in five years.

Earlier www1.ru reported that the Smolensk NPP started preparing sites for the construction of new power units.
