Rostekhnadzor has issued a permit to extend the service life of the second power unit of the Smolensk Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) for an additional five years. This was reported by the press service of the state corporation "Rosatom".
This is the second extension after a large-scale modernization. Now the power unit will operate not for 30, but for 45 years.
According to new data, consumers will receive an additional 35 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity. Smolensk NPP will continue to produce isotopic products necessary for medicine and industry.
Now all three power units of the Smolensk NPP are operating with extended terms. This will allow generating more than 100 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in five years.
Earlier www1.ru reported that at the Smolensk NPP started preparing sites for the construction of new power units.
