Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov (MSU) discovered a new feature of the penetration of a sonic boom that occurs during the movement of supersonic aircraft. This was reported in the press service of the university.
Scientists recreated the conditions under which a sonic boom penetrates into rooms and cars through windows. Previously, it was believed that the sound wave causes the windows to vibrate, which then leads to the formation of pressure waves inside the room. However, new data shows that the entire window unit shifts in the opening as a single unit, like a monolithic piston.
Consequently, effective ways to shield a sonic boom in rooms are to increase the rigidity and damping of the window blocks in the opening instead of increasing the rigidity of the window block itself, which is ineffective.
Sonic booms are one of the main obstacles to the development of supersonic civil aviation, since they are perceived as loud and sharp claps on the earth's surface. Civil aircraft are designed to reduce the intensity of shock waves, but it is impossible to completely get rid of them at high speeds. Therefore, understanding the mechanisms of sonic boom penetration into rooms is important for improving their protection.
