KS-172 long-range air-to-air missiles have entered service with the Russian Aerospace Forces (VKS). Presumably, the innovative munition has been integrated into the weapons system of MiG-31BM fighters.
The development of the KS-172 started back in 1991 on the basis of the sustainer stage of the 9M83 anti-aircraft missile from the S-300V anti-aircraft missile system (SAM). However, the development of the missile then stalled, it was resumed in the 2000s, after which work stopped again.
According to available open data, the range of the KS-172, due to the presence of two stages, could reach 400 km, and the mass of the warhead is 50 kg.
Such characteristics would allow this air-to-air missile to more than surpass the American AIM-174B, also developed on the basis of the SM-6 anti-aircraft guided missile, and compete with the Chinese PL-17 of similar range.
