More than 200 thousand pages: Digital archive of wartime newspapers published for the 80th anniversary of Victory

To mark the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, Yandex, together with the National Electronic Library (NEL) and other partners, has compiled a unique collection of Soviet newspapers from 1941–1945. These include central, regional, front-line, and even partisan publications, many of which were previously unavailable online. Now, you can learn about the events of that time and the daily life of people in the "Search through Archives" section — a special section where digital copies of these newspapers are available.

NEL, the Russian State Library (RSL), and other libraries and archives of the country provided electronic copies of newspaper issues, and Yandex, using neural networks, performed text recognition and provided a convenient search for them — as fast as for modern websites. Thanks to this, users can easily find mentions of relatives, fellow countrymen, and other topics of interest to them.

The collection includes more than 200 thousand pages — from well-known publications such as "Pravda" and "Red Star" to lesser-known newspapers such as "Red Fleet", "For the Native Volga", "Chkalov Communard", "Leningrad Partisan". In them, you can find information about significant events: for example, about the opening of the Bolshoi Theater in September 1943 after a two-year break, or about the launch of new metro stations in Moscow — "Paveletskaya" and "Novokuznetskaya" — in the same year.

The newspapers also tell about the leisure of people in the rear. For example, in the summer of 1944, exhibitions of color reproductions of works of art from museums of the USSR were sent to the districts of the Moscow Coal Basin, and on the eve of Victory Day, the foreign film "Edison" was shown in cinemas.

Yandex's partners in this project were not only NEL and RSL, but also the N. A. Nekrasov Central Scientific Library, as well as regional libraries from Irkutsk, Chelyabinsk, Kirov, Arkhangelsk, Orenburg, and other cities. Yandex and NEL plan to expand the collection and will continue to make military archives more accessible to everyone.
