Scientists from Skoltech have developed an innovative system for monitoring composite materials based on carbon nanofibers. This technology allows continuous monitoring of the condition of composites both during the manufacture of composites and during their use.

Composite monitoring is currently based on methods that are suitable either for the production of materials or for their application. They are often not interchangeable, and we wanted to significantly change the approach to working with nanocomposites. We have developed a simple and universal technology that simplifies the process at both stages.
Hassaan Ahmad Butt, Researcher at Skoltech

The basis of the system is ultra-thin fibers made of single-layer carbon nanotubes, developed in the laboratory of Professor Albert Nasibulin. These fibers are integrated into the structure of the composite without degrading its properties, and at the same time effectively perform the function of sensors. Tests have shown that in terms of monitoring accuracy, they are not inferior to traditional metal electrodes.

The technology for manufacturing fibers from single-walled carbon nanotubes was developed in our laboratory, as were methods for producing nanocomposites. This publication shows how we combine our key competencies with the potential of national and international academic partners to create an advanced technology that can be easily scaled and applied.
Albert Nasibulin, Professor, Head of the Laboratory of Nanomaterials at Skoltech

In the future, the development will reduce diagnostic costs and increase the reliability of structures.
