The orbit of the International Space Station (ISS) has been adjusted to prevent a possible collision with space debris. This was reported by the press service of Roscosmos State Corporation.
At 01:10 Moscow time, the engines of the Progress MS-30 spacecraft were activated, which operated for 212.79 seconds and delivered an impulse of 0.3 m/s, which made it possible to increase the ISS orbit by approximately 540 meters.
As a result of the maneuver, the ISS orbital period was 92.89 minutes, the orbital inclination was 51.66 degrees. The average orbital altitude reached 418.74 km, the minimum was 417.86 km, and the maximum was 438.05 km.
At the end of December 2024, scientists warned of a growing threat to the Earth's orbital security amid a rapid increase in the amount of space debris. The greatest concern is the accumulation of debris in geostationary orbit at 35 thousand km from the Earth's surface. Experts attribute the increase in threats to the Kessler syndrome - a hypothetical scenario in which the number of debris and satellites in orbit reaches a critical level, provoking cascading collisions.
Earlierwww1.ru reported that the ISS had reached a new altitude.
