The heads of the space agencies of the BRICS countries met in the capital of Brazil on April 28. According to the Director General of Roscosmos, cooperation in space is reaching a new level - countries are actively exchanging Earth remote sensing (ERS) data.
Representatives of the space agencies of Russia, China, Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, South Africa and the UAE are present at the negotiations taking place on April 27-29.
There are 21 cosmodromes and launch complexes in the BRICS countries. About 1,500 spacecraft operate in space.
In just one year since the implementation of the agreements, the participants exchanged ERS data covering more than 27 million square kilometers of the Earth's surface.
The practical application of such cooperation has already yielded results. China provided Russia with data on 560 thousand square kilometers of territory to monitor the oil spill on the Black Sea coast. Russian satellites helped Indian partners in eliminating the consequences of earthquakes, providing information on 34.5 thousand square kilometers.
Work on the implementation of the Agreement between the space agencies of the BRICS countries on cooperation in the field of satellite grouping of Earth remote sensing is a necessary step in the development of cooperation in the peaceful exploration of space.
ERS data comes from spacecraft and ground stations of the five main participants in the agreement - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Bakanov presented a Roadmap for creating a unified ERS data exchange platform for 2025-2029.
