Russian Scientists a Step Closer to the Ideal Blood Substitute Thanks to the Properties of Poloxamer 188

Polymer research will improve the quality of blood substitutes, which will increase their effectiveness

Russian researchers have for the first time studied in detail the properties of poloxamer 188, a component used in the production of blood substitutes, including perftoran. The study, aimed at improving the stability and safety of artificial blood substitutes, was conducted by a group led by Maria Timchenko from the Institute of Theoretical and Experimental Biophysics of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ITEB RAS).

The scientists conducted experiments to find out how heating, sterilization and other conditions affect the properties of poloxamer. Advanced analysis methods such as atomic force microscopy and NMR spectroscopy were used for this purpose. The results showed that parameters such as temperature, pressure and salt concentration directly affect the stability and chemical composition of the solution.

The results of this study may be useful in choosing the optimal method of thermal sterilization of substances used to prepare perfluorocarbon emulsions.

The data obtained will improve the production technologies of blood substitutes, which will make them more effective and minimize possible side effects. Poloxamer 188 is used not only in perftoran, but also in other medical products, so improved properties of this component will have a positive impact on the pharmaceutical industry as a whole.
