A new method for synthesizing lanthanides — rare earth metals used in materials science — has been developed at St. Petersburg State University (SPbSU) and St. Petersburg Polytechnic University of Peter the Great (SPbPU).

Lanthanides are a group of rare elements used in electronics, nuclear energy, the space industry, and in the creation of catalysts. However, their extraction is associated with difficulties and requires complex purification technologies.
A solution of sodium terephthalate was added dropwise to solutions of lanthanide salts placed in an ultrasonic bath. As a result of the reaction, microparticles of lanthanide terephthalates precipitated and were then easily isolated by centrifugation. Unlike traditional methods, our approach does not require the addition of surfactants or organic solvents, which makes the process more environmentally friendly.
Earlier www1.ru reported that rare-earth lithium from the Murmansk region will cover 24.5% of all reserves of this metal in Russia.
