Magnetic storm swept across the Earth: background stabilization expected on March 10

Geomagnetic situation worsened due to a coronal hole on the Sun

A magnetic storm caused by a coronal hole on the Sun was recorded on Earth on March 9, 2025, according to the Institute of Applied Geophysics (FSBI "IPG").

According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the IKI RAS, there are currently three coronal holes on the Sun that are in the process of destruction. They may still have an impact on our planet.

Currently, the smaller of these holes is affecting the Earth. Scientists note that in the morning Moscow time, the level of geomagnetic field fluctuations twice exceeded the threshold for magnetic storms.

The degree of disturbance of the magnetic field reached level G2, which means "moderate" on a five-point scale. According to scientists, problems may arise in energy systems, as well as failures in radio navigation and high-frequency radio communications. Auroras can be recorded even at latitudes up to 50 degrees.

According to forecasts, the stabilization of the geomagnetic situation is expected on Monday, March 10.
