Hydro unit No. 4 (consisting of a hydro turbine and a hydro generator) will be replaced at the Nizhny Novgorod HPP. This is the third unit to be updated under the comprehensive modernization program, the press service of RusHydro reported.
Hydro unit No. 4 was put into operation in 1956. The unit has been in operation for almost 70 years, generating more than 14 billion kWh of electricity. It will be replaced with a new Russian-made unit with a capacity of 72.5 MW.
RusHydro plans to gradually replace all eight hydro units. As a result, the capacity of the Nizhny Novgorod HPP will increase to 580 MW.
At the same time, transformers, repair gates of hydro units and gates of the spillway dam, compressors, lighting and fire extinguishing systems are being replaced at the hydroelectric power station.
About the Nizhny Novgorod HPP
The construction of the Gorky HPP (now the Nizhny Novgorod HPP) on the Volga River in the Gorodetsky district of the Nizhny Novgorod region began in 1948. It was put into operation in 1956. The height of the dam is 40 meters. The type of dam is a spillway concrete and alluvial earth dam.
