Scientists from Perm National Research Polytechnic University (PNRPU) have found a way to improve ion engines used in spacecraft and robots. Here are the details.
Experts have developed a mathematical model that will help refine the design of a domestic ion engine during the design phase and reduce the risk of electrode failure during operation.
We have created a two-level calculation model that allows us to find the probabilities of damage and recalculate the elastic properties of the composite.
After recalculation, the stiffness of the electrodes decreased, which increases the amplitude of their movements and can lead to destruction. The work of scientists will help improve the design of ion engines and reduce the risk of electrode failure in spacecraft.
It should be reminded that ion engines are necessary to control the orientation and position of satellites in space. They create reactive thrust, and electrodes play a key role in this process - thin perforated plates. Due to vibration during operation, the electrodes can collide and break down, which negatively affects the operation of the engine.
