The Russian multi-functional fourth-generation Su-35S fighter is capable of successfully competing with the American F-16AM in aerial combat thanks to its advanced onboard systems. This was pointed out by military expert Evgeny Damantsev.
According to him, operating in radio silence mode with the "Irbis-E" and S-108 onboard radar stations turned off, the Su-35S crews can easily reach the ranges for using R-37M and R-77-1 missiles against the F-16AM when using the HOJ jamming guidance mode, or their own onboard radars when reducing the distance to 150 - 120 km.
Su-35S pilots can rely on passive detection means for heat-contrast air objects, such as onboard OLS-35 optoelectronic systems, capable of detecting an enemy F-16AM at a distance of less than 70 km.
