The French Suffren-class nuclear-powered multipurpose attack submarine (Barracuda project) is taking part in exercises using torpedoes. This submarine is considered one of the stealthiest, but it can be detected by Russian Yasen-M submarines, military expert Evgeny Damantsev writes.
The expert emphasized that Barracuda-class submarines have an ultra-low acoustic signature (40 - 45 dB) due to the use of pump-jet propulsors.
Advanced domestic sonar systems based on active-passive phased array acoustic antennas MGK-600 "Irtysh-Amphora-Yasen", installed on submarines of project 885M "Yasen-M", are capable of detecting Suffren at a speed of 3-5 knots at a distance of up to 50 km in favorable hydrological conditions and up to 10-15 km in difficult hydrological conditions.
Submarines of project 885 "Yasen" and 885M "Yasen-M" are a series of Russian multipurpose nuclear submarines armed with cruise missiles. The lead cruiser of the project, Severodvinsk, joined the Northern Fleet in 2014.
