The National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute" has announced plans to modernize its synchrotron "KISI-Kurchatov" in 2027. This was announced by the institute's vice president, Alexander Blagov.
In terms of energy, the lifetime of the beam will be significantly extended, and we will increase the brightness by almost 10 times, or even more. This is the main task.
According to Blagov, in 2024, the institute signed a major contract for the implementation of the project, which includes the manufacture of all systems and part of the building for modernization. In 2024, the facility will celebrate its 25th anniversary, and the current parameters do not allow to fully unlock the potential of research stations. As a result of the modernization, it is planned to increase the number of stations from 14 to 20.
The Kurchatov Synchrotron is the only specialized source of synchrotron radiation in the post-Soviet space and a unique scientific facility of the "megascience" class. The facility operates 23 hours a day, six days a week. Work is interrupted only during the summer holidays.
Synchrotron radiation is a universal research tool for highly sensitive X-ray studies in the fields of chemistry, biology, physics, and archaeology.
Earlier www1.ru reported that the launch of the SKIF synchrotron has been postponed to 2025.
