Geolocation-based fare payment in urban ground transport will be implemented in more than 10 Russian cities by the end of 2024. This information was announced by Roman Spiridonov, Deputy General Director of the development company Datapax, at the international forum "Transport of Russia."
The technology is based on comparing the geolocation of the vehicle and the passenger's smartphone. Based on this data, the payment amount is calculated, and funds are debited from the linked bank card.
Currently, the technology is operational in the Tver, Yaroslavl regions, Udmurtia, and is being tested in the Moscow region. It was recently launched in Kazan and the Nizhny Novgorod region. Plans for the near future include launching it in St. Petersburg and other regions of the country.
Geolocation-based payment is also being tested on suburban electric trains in Kazan, Kaliningrad, and Nizhny Novgorod.
It is expected that in 2025, this technology will be implemented in the southern regions of Russia, Siberia, and the Far East. The company is already working with 10 more regions in these areas. It is projected that the number of transactions using geolocation will increase several times, and by 2025 it may exceed 50 million.
The technology has already shown good results in the regions where it has been implemented, with a noticeable increase in the number of users due to the convenience of the new payment method. In Moscow, geolocation-based payment is not yet used in ground transport, although a pilot project has already been launched in the Moscow region, and the possibility of its expansion is being considered.
