Rosatom Prepares to Decommission Second Unit of Leningrad NPP with RBMK Reactor

Fuel Assemblies Transported for Post-Irradiation Examination at Operating Power Units of the Station

Rosatom State Corporation has completed the removal of nuclear fuel from the second power unit of the Leningrad NPP. Fuel assemblies that have used less than half of their resource have been transported to the station's operating power units for further operation, the state corporation's press service reported.

The possibility and validity of the proposals of the Leningrad nuclear scientists for the post-irradiation examination of nuclear fuel from the stopped reactors were confirmed by the scientific and technical support institutions – NIKIET, Kurchatov Institute, and VNIIAES.

The implementation of this initiative will save 1010 new fuel assemblies.
