UAVs Based on New Polymer: Thermoresistant Material Developed in Russia to Protect Drones

Specialists from Bauman Moscow State Technical University have developed a heat-resistant polymer to protect drones

Specialists from the Center of Competencies of the National Technological Initiative (NTI) "Digital Materials Science: New Materials and Substances" based at Bauman Moscow State Technical University have developed a heat-resistant polymer that can protect drones from ignition at high temperatures, including fire or combat conditions. This information was provided to TASS by the press service of the Foundation for Supporting NTI Projects.

Scientists have created a new technology for the synthesis of polyetherimides (PEI) and obtained samples of materials with increased heat resistance. The melting point of the new polymer increased from 217°C, which is the maximum value to date, to 245°C. This significant improvement will protect drones made from this material from ignition in overheating conditions.

A key element in improving the technology was the introduction of heat-resistant components into the structure of polyetherimides at one of the synthesis stages. Alexander Khina, a researcher at the NTI Competence Center, noted that this approach will allow the use of the new material in unmanned aerial vehicles operating in high-temperature conditions, which will reduce the risk of equipment failure due to overheating.

The development of a heat-resistant polymer opens up new opportunities for drones that will be able to perform reconnaissance operations and rescue missions in fire conditions, penetrating various zones of buildings. In combat conditions, drones will be able to successfully perform their tasks even when exposed to high temperatures.

In addition to its use in drones, the new polymer may find demand in the aviation and automotive industries, biomedicine, and membrane technologies, which emphasizes its versatility and potential in various industries.
