Bulgarian Military: Unconventional tactics of the Russian military have sparked debate among experts

Russian military personnel have begun using car tires to confuse enemy missiles equipped with IR-guidance systems. The tires are placed on the wings and fuselage of Tu-160 and Tu-95 aircraft, writes Bulgarian Military.

According to Schuyler Moore, Chief Technology Officer at U.S. Central Command, the tires prevent guidance systems of missiles and UAVs that use computer vision from recognizing the target.

As Bulgarian Military writes, information about the new strategy of the Russian military to protect aircraft appeared in August 2023. At that time, satellites detected aircraft at the Engels base, "dressed" in tires.

A month later, a photo of a Su-34 fighter-bomber with tires on its fuselage appeared online. Apparently, this is protection against Neptune anti-ship cruise missiles with infrared homing, as well as Storm Shadow and SCALP-EG missiles, which also use IR homing devices to capture targets in the final stages of flight, journalists suggested.
