"Complete paralysis": Murmansk-BN coastal electronic warfare system protected the Kaliningrad region from enemy cruise missile carriers

Maneuvers took place in the Baltic Fleet

Military personnel of the electronic warfare (EW) units stationed in the Kaliningrad region conducted tactical and special exercises in the Baltic Fleet. The soldiers practiced actions related to electronic reconnaissance, as well as combating various types of UAVs, the fleet's press service reported.

According to the exercise scenario, a detachment of foreign navy cruise missile carriers entered the fleet's area of responsibility. The crews of the Murmansk-BN electronic warfare system, which is in service with the center, carried out an operational build-up of assets on permanent combat duty.

The press service added that the military personnel identified the radio frequencies of several reconnaissance aircraft with an airborne radar detection and guidance system. Then, a mobile EW group used the latest anti-drone guns against the simulated enemy.

Military personnel of the Baltic Fleet regularly identify radio communication frequencies in the shortwave range of ships, submarines, patrol aircraft, and strategic bombers of other states.

About the Murmansk-BN electronic warfare system

Murmansk-BN is a shortwave coastal electronic warfare system that can:

  • conduct radio reconnaissance
  • intercept and suppress enemy signals at a distance of up to 5,000 km

The system finds and direction-finds typical HF radio communication means and creates interference to HF radio communication lines. The West highly appreciates the effectiveness of the Murmansk-BN. French military expert Xavier Raufer, in an article for Atlantico, wrote about the "absolute paralysis and impossibility of timely response from NATO forces based in Western Europe" due to the Russian electronic warfare system.
