The arrest of Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov fully complies with the principles and spirit of the European Union's Digital Services Act, a source in Brussels legal circles told TASS.
According to this act, operators of social networks and Internet platforms are responsible for the content posted on their resources. They are obliged to automatically remove prohibited content in order to avoid punishment. However, as the source noted, the Digital Services Act does not imply personal or criminal liability for operators. In France, the prosecution went further, bringing criminal charges against Durov, which is not directly provided for by this act.
In fact, Durov's case repeats the Assange precedent. In both cases, the blow is struck against the creator of a large independent media resource using criminal charges.
According to him, Durov's French citizenship provides the prosecution with more opportunities. At the same time, his Russian origin may reduce public support in Europe, the source believes.
According to the LCI TV channel, Pavel Durov was detained at Le Bourget airport on August 24 at about 20:00 local time (21:00 Moscow time). Durov arrived in France from Azerbaijan accompanied by a woman and a bodyguard.
Against the background of these reports, the TON cryptocurrency fell below the top 10 cryptocurrencies by capitalization. The value of TON fell by 20% in 24 hours.
Earlier www1.ru reported that possible charges include money laundering, terrorism, prohibited sexual content, drugs, and fraud. Since Durov has French citizenship (presumably received in 2021), he will be tried as a French citizen.
