In the USSR, the "Object 279" tank project was developed, designed for combat in Europe even in a nuclear war. This is according to a material from The National Interest.
Journalists from the publication noted that the tank was designed to achieve survivability even in a nuclear explosion. The armored vehicle was equipped with four tracks to avoid sinking and minimize pressure on the ground.
The "Object 279" received a 1000-horsepower diesel engine that could accelerate the tank to a speed of up to 35 miles, or about 55 kilometers per hour.
The main gun was quite large, 130 millimeters in diameter. Although it was developed in the 1950s, it would be considered large even by today's standards. For comparison, the American M1 Abrams tank has a 120-millimeter main gun.
However, the most unique thing about the tank was its armor, which was supposed to withstand both nuclear explosions and anti-tank projectiles.
However, due to the development of the main tank concept and changes in military doctrine, the "Object 279" project was canceled. Scientists and analysts came to the conclusion that conventional weapons, not nuclear warheads, would be used in the next war in Europe.
