The first photos of a prototype of an unknown operational-tactical missile system (OTRK), which was named Iskander-1000, have appeared online. The systems (developed by the Engineering Design Bureau) can be deployed in the Kaliningrad or Smolensk region, which will allow Russia to potentially target almost half of Europe, as well as naval facilities in the Baltic Sea, writes Army Recognition.
The development of the Iskander-1000 followed reports of improved missiles for the Iskander and Kinzhal complexes. We are talking about modernizing missiles to increase range, create more powerful warheads and improved air defense evasion characteristics. These developments are Russia's response to US plans to deploy long-range missiles in Germany. The potential deployment of the Iskander-1000 OTRK in the Smolensk region could pose a significant threat to F-16 fighters.
According to Army Ewcognition, the Iskander-1000 will receive 9M723-1/K5 missiles with a 10–15% increased volume of solid propellant charge, as well as an updated engine, an improved control system and a modified warhead.
This new Russian ballistic missile will most likely be equipped with an autonomous inertial guidance system, with correction using satellite navigation and radar guidance based on a terrain map in the target area at the final stage of the flight. The missile's deviation from the target is estimated to be within 5 meters.
The new fuel will allow the missile to reach a speed of about 2700–3100 m/s, delivering high-explosive fragmentation or cluster warheads weighing up to 350 kg to a range of 900–1000 km. Lighter warheads will be able to reach targets at a distance of up to 1250–1300 km. The missile will be equipped with gas-dynamic control and aerodynamic rudders for maneuvering with overloads of up to 25–30 units.
