Московский публичный Wi-Fi будет блокировать доступ к запрещённой информации

The Russian capital will spend over 1 billion rubles on public Wi-Fi with content filtering and data stream recognition

The total amount of contracts for 2024, concluded by the city for the purchase of public Wi-Fi, has already exceeded 1 billion rubles, which is twice as much as in 2023.

According to the Kommersant newspaper, public Wi-Fi will receive content filtering. This is due to the need to ensure security and anti-terrorism measures, as well as compliance with Russian law.

DPI (Deep Packet Inspection) technology will be used to enhance traffic control. Content filtering using special hardware and software systems will:

  • recognize data streams;
  • identify user applications, including gaming;
  • track voice calls and direct connections between users;
  • block access to information prohibited by law.

It is already known that three companies will provide public Wi-Fi to Muscovites and visitors to the capital in the coming years. In 2024, Mosgortelecom concluded contracts after tenders to provide public Wi-Fi with VimpelCom for 319 million rubles, with Setel (part of the Almatel holding) for 159 million rubles, and with MTS for 596 million rubles.
