Researchers from Novosibirsk State Technical University (NETI) have presented an innovative electronic "guide" for the visually impaired. This compact device, using vibration and voice signals, warns of obstacles at a distance of up to four meters, helping users avoid dangers and better navigate in space.
Unlike the traditional white cane, which is limited by its length and can interfere with fast walking, the new device promises more comfort and convenience. Equipped with infrared and ultrasonic sensors, the "guide" recognizes obstacles in the range from 10 cm to 4 m.
The electronic assistant recognizes the following types of obstacles: a wall, a staircase down or a cliff, a staircase up, a shallow pit, a low obstacle, and an overhanging obstacle. To recognize all types of obstacles, a mathematical model of the device's operation was created, and an algorithm was built on its basis, which is implemented on a microcontroller.
The device is comfortable to hold in either hand and does not require connection to a phone or other devices. The battery lasts for a whole day of active use, and vibration indicates the need for recharging.
Surveys have shown that users are ready to integrate this gadget into their lives along with a white cane.
