«Progress MS-28» sent for «drying» at Baikonur

The cargo ship was transported to a vacuum chamber for leak tests

«Progress MS-28» was placed on the cradles of the vacuum chamber after tests in a space simulator: in an anechoic chamber. Their space truck passed successfully.

Specialists from RSC «Energia» confirmed the readiness of the «Progress» onboard systems for operations to put into orbit and dock with the ISS. Now they are checking how airtight the ship is.

To check the tightness of «Progress MS-28», you must first pump all the air out of the chamber. And then wait a little longer until the remnants of the gas, together with the smallest particles of moisture, evaporate from the surface of the ship itself. Including from the screen-vacuum thermal insulation, which «wraps» our space truck. This is called «drying». Then, through special pipelines, helium can be supplied inside the compartments and pipelines of «Progress». If there is a microscopic leak somewhere, the sensors inside the chamber will «feel» the helium and report this to specialists.
