Anthropomorphic Lunar Rover Robot from Magnitogorsk Tested

It proved its ability to participate in long-term planetary missions

The unique SIRIUS 2024 experiment, involving a universal android robot on a mobile platform from the Magnitogorsk NPO Android Technics, has concluded at the Yu. A. Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. It tested its operation on the surface of the Moon and demonstrated the suitability of its technologies for long-term planetary work outside of Earth. Real astronauts also participated in the space mission simulation experiment.

This landing operation was divided into two stages. In the first stage, the crew members simulated landing on the surface in small groups and performed a series of necessary tests "on the Moon." The second stage of research was conducted using a universal anthropomorphic robot on a mobile platform developed by NPO Android Technics. During the experiment, astronauts and researchers studied the possibilities of remotely controlling the robot and developed methods of interaction between the robot and the spacecraft crew.

The robot successfully coped with microgravity conditions, performed complex manipulations using special equipment, and passed testing of automation and self-learning systems.

This is a "relative" of the FEDOR android robot, which was also developed at Android Technics. During the SOYUZ-F project, FEDOR became the world's first robot-cosmonaut to complete a full cycle of space flight in August 2019. It completed the planned scientific program and safely returned to Earth. The groundwork from the SOYUZ-F line formed the basis of the lunar rover robot.

It is noteworthy that Russia did not participate in testing the new lunar rover robot alone. It is known that the experiment "was carried out within the framework of international cooperation with the participation of specialists from various countries". However, which states participated in it is not specified, nor whether these were partners in the International Scientific Lunar Station project, which will start operating by 2036.
