Employees of the Privolzhsky Research Medical University (PIMU) in Nizhny Novgorod have developed a technology for the rehabilitation of military personnel with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This was reported by the press service of the educational institution.
According to statistics from foreign studies, PTSD occurs in 27.8% of veterans and combatants. The disorder is a condition that arises after a traumatic event that poses a threat to a person's life. During an attack, a person may experience aggression or panic.
When examining participants in the fighting in Afghanistan, PTSD was detected in 17-19% of combatants. Recent Russian studies have shown that 40% of military combatants have one or another sign of PTSD
The approach of scientists is that the military will undergo preliminary examinations that will help assess the work of the heart during physical exertion and at rest. Those undergoing rehabilitation will be taught the basics of self-regulation and the technique of relaxation breathing in stressful conditions.
In total, the treatment will take about ten sessions of exposure psychotherapy in virtual reality in VR glasses using computer simulation of sounds and images that have been adapted to the individual trauma of the military personnel.
As part of the project, about 100 participants in hostilities with PTSD were examined. Now the technology is being tested, and in 2025 the product will be introduced into centers for medical and psychological rehabilitation of military personnel.
