Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Ministry of Defense to prepare troops for exercises with the use of non-strategic (tactical) nuclear weapons. Missile units of the Southern Military District (SMD), aviation and forces of the Navy will take part in the maneuvers.
The Ministry of Defense emphasized that during the exercises, military personnel will practice a set of measures related to the use of nuclear weapons. The main task of the maneuvers is to ensure readiness to respond to ensure Russia's sovereignty against the backdrop of provocative statements by some leaders of Western countries.
About non-strategic nuclear weapons
Non-strategic (tactical) nuclear weapons are nuclear munitions for destroying large targets and enemy forces. Unlike strategic nuclear weapons, the TNT equivalent of tactical warheads is usually less than a kiloton.
Types of tactical nuclear weapons:
- aerial bombs
- artillery shells
- tactical missiles
- anti-aircraft missiles
- air-to-air missiles
- anti-missiles
- underwater nuclear charges
Russia has a wide range of non-strategic nuclear weapons.
Earlier, exercises were held in the Irkutsk region with the use of a mobile Yars missile system (nuclear deterrent missile). The complex belongs to the nuclear triad of Russia (land, air and sea nuclear deterrent forces).
